Music, War and Love is the story of a great romantic love, of lifelong friendship, and of the power of art, especially music, to bring together people of different nationalities, religion, or cultural background. The story begins in 1931 in the thriving multi-cultural city of Łódź, continues in Germany and London, with the finale in 1949 in New York City. The film’s main characters are singer Robert Pułaski and talented violinist Rachel Rubin. Their stories have been inspired by the biographies of Polish musicians from the 1930s and 1940s. The painful experience of war will separate the two protagonists, but fate will give them a second chance.
Music, War and Love is directed by American director Martha Coolidge, director of The Prince and Me, and the Sex and the City, The Twilight Zone and Weeds TV series) and the first female president of the Directors Guild of America (DGA). The film’s producers are Polish-Canadian businessman Zbigniew John Raczyński and Polish-American screenwriter, writer and translator Bożenna Intrator, who also wrote the original script. Raczyński and Intrator invited producer Fred Roos to come on board. Roos is known as the producer of Apocalypse Now and the Godfather trilogy by Francis Ford Coppola, as well as Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette. Fred Roos is also a legendary casting director, who discovered a number of Hollywood stars, including Harrison Ford, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Scarlett Johansson, Jodie Foster, Diane Lane, and Val Kilmer. The screenplay was adapted by David S. Ward, who received the Academy Award for the screenplay to The Sting and co-write the script for Sleepless in Seattle. The attached director of photography is Alexander Gruszyński, Polish-born cinematographer working in Los Angeles (The Craft, 54), with Marek Dobrowolski (The Craft) as production designer, supported on the Polish side by Polish production designers Magdalena Dipont and Robert Czesak.
The cast of Music, War and Love features actors from the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Poland. The two female leads are played by Adelaide Clemens (The Great Gatsby”) as Rachel and Connie Nielsen (The Gladiator) as Lena; the role of Robert will be played by Leo Suter, while young Robert will be played by Toby Sebastian, known for his performance in Game of Thrones. One of the male parts will be played by Stellan Skarsgård (Nymphomaniac). The film’s Polish cast includes Małgorzata Kożuchowska, Weronika Rosati, and Maciej Zakościelny.
