We Owe Him Our Lives is a portrait of Wilhelm Hosenfeld, who helped to save the lives of several Jews and Poles during World War Ii, among them composer and pianist Władysław Szpilman.
Hosenfeld, a zealous Catholic, had from the beginning opposed the repressions perpetrated by the Nazis. He died in 1952 in a Soviet gulag near Stalingrad; Szpilman’s attempts to gain his release was not successful. He was posthumously honoured with the Commander’s Cross of the Order of “Polonia Restituta” and the title “Righteous Among the Nations” awarded by Israel..
