After losing his job, writer Harry Ricks decides to leave the US and move to Paris. He moves partly to be closer to his daughter who lives in Paris with her mother. Having no other choice, he takes a job as a night watchman for the Russian mafia. His only job is to press a button when he hears a bell. He hopes that the quiet nights will allow him to concentrate on his novel. A sudden twist in his life brings around an affair with a woman named Margit, who sets a strange set of rules for their encounters.
