In a mission to repatriate French nationals in the days following World War Two, the French Red Cross is gathering French citizens at a local hospital in Poland. One of the hospital staff is a young doctor named Mathilde Beaulieu. One day, a Polish nun from a nearby convent arrives at the hospital, begging for help for a dying woman; one of the nuns is in labour. The nuns had been victims of a gang rape by Red Army soldiers. Mathilde wants to seek help, but the Mother Superior is determined to keep the matter a secret in order to avoid a scandal.
