32nd AFI Fest in Los Angeles
This year, November 8-15, the 32nd AFI Fest in Los Angeles will take place.
The festival specializes in the presentation of debuts, second films and documentaries. In addition, the festival hosts world cinema shows, retrospectives, special screenings and discussions.
“Fuga” in the World Cinema section
AFI Fest is a prestigious event, which this year will also include Polish accents. The World Cinema section will present the best-known international films of the year and contain 28 titles from 27 countries. In the program of the festival, we can find “Fuga” directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska. In Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s second full-length film, the main character, played by Gabriela Muskała, loses her memory, changes her personality, and when she returns to her old life after two years, both she and her surroundings have to face a new reality. The world premiere of the film took place in Cannes, the film was also awarded at the 43rd Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia and the festival in Sitges.
“III” in the short film program
Among the short films, the only Polish movie is the animation “III” by Marta Pajek produced by Animoon. 12-minute animation by Marta Pajek is a suggestive story about the relationship between two lovers. A middle-aged woman and a man meet in the waiting room and immediately approach each other. He helps her take off the heavy black fur under which she is naked. This starts a mutual game, consisting of alternating seduction and stripping each other and becomes more and more brutal over time. “III” is a portrait of a woman in an exhausting relationship with a man which attracts and repels with equal strength. The film is the third part of the triptych “Impossible Figures and Other Stories”. The film was shown, among others at the Cannes festival.
Special screenings of “Cold War”
As a part of special screenings, Paweł Pawlikowski’s “Cold War” will be shown. The film is a Polish candidate for the Oscar®. This section will show 11 titles.
Joanna Kulig is a guest of the festival
During the 32nd AFI Fest Joanna Kulig who is currently promoting the film “Cold War”, Polish candidate for Oscar®, will take part in the panel devoted to independent films, organized by the Hollywood Reporter. In addition to the Polish actress, the panel will be composed of Willem Dafoe, Richard E. Grant, Kathryn Hahn, Felicity Jones, Thomasin McKenzie, Rosamund Pike and John C. Reilly.
Every autumn, as part of the AFI FEST, the American Film Institute presents the best in their opinion movies from around the world. In the 30-year history of the AFI FEST festival, many of the presented films won later nominations and Oscar statuettes.
