“High Life” with the FIPRESCI award

The Franco-German-British-Polish co-production “High Life” by Claire Denis was shown in the main competition. Claire Denis received for her film the FIPRESCI award from the International Association of Film Critics. The Polish co-producers are Klaudia Śmieja and Beata Rzeźniczek from Madants. The author of some of the pictures for the film was Tomasz Naumiuk, the set design was created by Mela Melak and Marcin Rodak was responsible for the makeup. In addition to Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche, the cast includes Agata Buzek. Piotr Bartuszek was responsible for the casting. The film was created in cooperation with Match & Spark.

The script tells the story of convicts deciding to exchange their sentences for participation in a dangerous mission, the aim of which is to obtain black hole energy and observe biological processes of people staying in the extraterrestrial space for a long time. During the mission, tensions  between its participants increase. 

The film was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute under the priority of production of minority co-productions.

According to the producer, the film has already been sold virtually to all territories. It will be introduced to Polish cinemas by Against Gravity in the first quarter of next year and in October, the film will be shown at the Warsaw Film Festival. “High Life” premiere took place during the Toronto International Film Festival. The screening in San Sebastian was the European premiere of the film.

“Another Day of Life” with the audience award

Presented, among others in Cannes and Annecy, the co-production “Another Day of Life” is based on a book by the legendary Polish war correspondent Ryszard Kapuściński. The film was shown in the prestigious PEARLS competition section, which presents films that have not been shown in cinemas in Spain so far, but have already appeared in the international festival circuit. “Another Day of Life” received  the main prize of the section, the audience award. The premiere in Spanish cinemas is scheduled for October 26th.

It tells the story of a journalist who, left alone, writes a reportage about the civil war in Angola on the eve of regaining the independence in 1975. During the expedition, the reporter realizes that he is a witness to events which meaning will require going beyond the role of an observer. In order to tell the history of Angola he will have to undergo a profound change. “Another Day of Life”, a book in which Kapuściński writes about his experiences in Angola, is a testimony of his rebirth as both a writer and a man

The film’s directors are Damian Nenow (Poland) and Raúl de la Fuente (Spain). The authors of the screenplay are Raúl de la Fuente, Damian Nenow, Amaia Remírez, David Weber and Niall Johnson. The film is a Polish-Spanish-German-Belgian-Hungarian co-production. Polish film producers are Jarosław Sawko and Ole Wendorff-Østergaard from Platige Films. India Sales is responsible for international distribution. The Polish distributor is Next Film, which will introduce the movie to cinemas on November 2nd, 2018.

“Another Day of Life” also received the Best Basque Script Award from the Professional Association of Screenwriters (La Asociación Profesional de Guionistas de Euskal Herria).

The film is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.
