The first titles of films in the Panorama lineup of the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival have been announced. Among the 20 films screened is the latest film by Małgorzata Szumowska – Sponsoring (Elles). The film was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.
Cannes, Toronto, and Berlin
The world premiere of Elles took place at the Toronto International Film Festival. Elles is the story of Anne (Juliette Binoche), a journalist writing an article about prostitution among female students. While researching the article, she meets two young women – Charlotte (Anaïs Demoustier) and Alicja (Joanna Kulig). They bring her into the world of love for sale. Written by Małgorzata Szumowska and Danish screenwriter Tine Byrckel, the screenplay of Elles received recognition at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. Elles is scheduled for release in Polish cinemas on February 17.
In addition to the three actresses mentioned above, Elles also features Krystyna Janda and Andrzej Chyra. Filmed in Paris and Cologne, the film was lensed by Michał Englert, and scored by Paweł Mykietyn. Elles is an international co-production between Zentropa International Poland, Zentropa International Koln, the Paris-based company Slot Machine, and Canal+. Elles was also co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.
Another Polish Film in Panorama
Elles will screen as the opening film of the Panorama section, along with the latest film by Tony Gatlif, Indignados. Panorama is one of the Berlinale sections that complements the Main Competition. Films screening in Panorama show the latest trends and accomplishments in arthouse and independent filmmaking around the world. Last year’s Panorama section in Berlin featured Jan Komasa’s Sala Samobójców (Suicide Room).
The 62nd edition of the Berlin International Film Festival will run from February 9 through February 19, 2012.
