Feature Film About the Events of December, 1970

This latest feature from Antoni Krauze – director of Akwarium (Aquarium), Palec Boży (The Finger of God), and Strach (Fear) – will present the tragic events by telling the true story of the family of Brunon Drywa, who was shot dead at a train station in Gdynia on Thursday, December 17, 1970.

The script was written by journalists Mirosław Piepka and Michał Pruski, who witnessed the December’70 turmoil in Gdańsk and Gdynia as teenage boys. 40 years later, they decided to bring the story to the young generation, and wrote a script based on their own memoirs, witness statements and a number of documents.

Jacek Petrycki, one of Poland’s most prominent cinematographers who has worked on Amator (Camera Buff), Przesłuchanie (Interrogation), Europa Europa and many others, will be director of photography. Original music will be written by Michał Lorenc, who has scored many Polish and foreign movies.

The lead parts will be played by Marta Bucka-Honzatko (theatrical actress from Krakow), Marta Kalmus-Jankowska and Michał Kowalski (both Gdańsk-based acting professionals). Supporting roles will be played by Krystyna Janda, Wojciech Pszoniak, Piotr Fronczewski, and Witold Dębicki, among others. The cast will consist of about 80 actors and hundreds of extras. Many scenes will be shot on location, with some shots involving up to 2,000 people.

November 2009 also brought the construction of a studio set that will help depict the events that took place 40 years ago. A special sound stage was built in the Gdynia port, where the sets for Brunon Drywa’s apartment, Władysław Gomułka’s office, and the Communist party plenary session hall will be constructed.

The film is produced by Nordfilm and the SET advertising agency, with co-financing from the Polish Film Institute, the Gdynia Film Fund, the National Centre for Culture (NCK), the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), and a number of sponsors. The honorary patron of the film is Wojciech Szczurek, Mayor of Gdynia.

Shooting is expected to start on February 16. The film is to be ready for release in late October or early November 2010. Its television premiere will take place on December 17, 2010 – the 40th anniversary of the tragic events in Gdynia.
