"Ida" Wins BAFTA and Goya Awards

Ida, a film directed by Paweł Pawlikowski and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, has recently received more international awards. Last weekend, this Polish feature nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography received the foreign language BAFTA award of the British Film Academy and the Goya Award of the Spanish Academy for Best European Film.

Goya Award: Best European Film

February 7, 2015 marked the awards ceremony of the 19th Goya Awards of the Spanish Academy of Film Arts and Sciences. The Goya awards are presented in 28 categories. The winning film in the Best European Film category was Paweł Pawlikowski’s Ida. Other films nominated in this category included Qu’est-ce u’on a fait au Bon Dieu? [international title: Serial (Bad) Weddings] by Philippe de Chauveron (France), Hundraåringen som lev ut genome fönstret och försvann (The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared) by Felix Herngren (Sweden), and The Salt of the Earth (Brazil/France/Italy), a film directed by Juliano Ribeiro Salgado and Wim Wenders. The award for Best Film went to La isla mínima, a film by Alberto Rodríguez.

BAFTA Award: Film not in the English Language

February 8, 2015 marked the awards ceremony of the 68th edition of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards. Paweł Pawlikowski’s Ida won the BAFTA award in the Film Not in the English Language category, beating Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan, the Dardenne brothers’ Two Days, One Night, Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox, and Stephen Daldry’s Trash. Łukasz Żal and Ryszard Lenczowski were also nominated for BAFTA award for best cinematography; the award in this category went to Emmanuel Lubezki for his work on Birdman. The BAFTA award for Best Film went to Richard Linklater’s Boyhood.
