„Kill It and Leave This Town” honored in Annecy

The film „Kill It and Leave This Town” received a jury award in the main competition of the 44th International Animation Film Festival in Annecy. The film directed by Mariusz Wilczyński is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. The French online event took part between 15 till 30 of June.

The world premiere of „Kill It and Leave This Town” took place in the Encounters competition at the 70th International Film Festival in Berlin. The film is the full-length directorial debut of Mariusz Wilczyński. Voices in the animation are given by, among others Krystyna Janda, Andrzej Chyra, Maja Ostaszewska and Małgorzata Kożuchowska.

It is an autobiographical impression, reminiscence of childhood images, in which the memory of deceased parents and the hometown of Łódź comes to life. A team of talented animators cooperated with the implementation of the film: Agata Gorządek, Jakub Wroński, Marta Pajek, Agnieszka Borowa, Marta Magnuska, Joanna Jasińska-Koronkiewicz, Paweł Walicki, Kacper Czyczyło, Agnieszka Konarska and Anita Kwiatkowska-Naqvi. The author of the music for the film is Tadeusz Nalepa.

Movie plot

Escaping despair after losing loved ones, the hero hides in a safe land of memories, where time stands still and all his loved ones live. Over the years, the city develops in his imagination. One day childhood heroes and idols known from literature and cartoons, who are forever young in the minds of subsequent generations, come uninvited. When the hero discovers that everyone has grown old and eternal youth does not exist, he decides to return to real life.

The producers of the film are Agnieszka Ścibior (Bombonierka) and Ewa Puszczyńska (Extreme Emotions). The co-producers are: National Film Archive – Audiovisual Institute, Adam Mickiewicz Institute, EC1, Letko, Nolabel, Di Factory, Gigant Films.

44th edition of the festival

The Annecy festival is one of the most prestigious animated film festivals in the world and the oldest in Europe. It is one of the events where the awarded films (awarded with Le Cristal d’Annecy and the Special Jury Award) find their way onto the list of proposals that can be nominated for the American Film Academy Award – Oscar. Five Polish films have been included in the program of this year’s edition.

In addition to „Kill It and Leave This Town”, there were also such films as „Evening” directed by Marcin Giżycki in the off-limits section, „I’m here” by Julia Orlik, „Portrait of a woman” by Natalia Durszewicz and „Such a Beautiful Town” by Marta Koch in graduation films.
