Polish Filmmakers Awarded in Cairo

December 6 brought the closing of the 35th Cairo International Film Festival. The Tahrir Square Prize, the top prize in the Human Rights Competition, went to Róża (Rosa) by Wojciech Smarzowski. The Best Actor award in Cairo’s International Competition went to Marian Dziędziel for his performance in Piąta pora roku (The Fifth Season of the Year) by Jerzy Domaradzki.
Awards for Films Co-Financed by the Polish Film Institute
The Cairo IFF’s Human Rights Competition lineup featured 17 films from around the world that touched upon issues related to human rights. The top prize in this section went to Róża (Rosa) by Wojciech Smarzowski. International jury members – Ghada Shahbender (screenwriter, head of the jury), Bouchra (actress), Ghaleb Shaath (director), Katarzyna Zawadzka (actress), Mamoun Hassan (screenwriter and producer), and Hans-Christian Mahnke (director) – awarded The Tahrir Square Prize to Rosa as “the best film promoting the values of human rights.” The jury also recognized the film for its “very fine cinematic language and for a vision of a better world where people live in peace and with tolerance and acceptance.”
Marian Dziędziel Voted Best Actor in International Competition
The International Competition of the 35th Cairo IFF jury members Marco Müller (head of jury, former director of the Rotterdam, Locarno and Venice film festivals), Khaled Abol Naga (actor), Babak Payami (director), Menna Chalabi (actress), Madhur Bhandarkar (director), Fabio Testi (actor), Magdalena Boczarska (actress), Malek El Akkad (producer), and Richard Pena (head of the New York Film Festival) among the acting performances in the competition’s 19 films voted Marian Dziędziel’s role in Piąta pora roku (The Fifth Season of the Year) as worthy of the Best Actor prize. The jury verdict on the festival website states that Marian Dziędziel was recognized “for his rich and subtle performance as an older man facing a new turn in his life.” The Cairo award marks yet another international form of recognition for Dziędziel, following the acting award at the Antalya Golden Orange festival in Turkey, where he received recognition for his performance in Supermarket by Maciej Żak.
The Cairo International Film Festival is accredited with the FIAPF International Federation of Film Producers Associations as an international competitive film festival.
