To the north, just beyond this point is No Man’s Land and the Arctic Ocean. To the west, for 600 kilometres there is only deep, never-melting snow, with the first line of trees 1,000 kilometres beyond. The border guard’s base is composed of three wooden shacks. This is Czeluskin – a Russian military unit. Eight men are always at the base, which is sunny for 24 hours a day in the summer and enclosed in everlasting darkness in the winter, when the temperature drops to minus 50 degrees centigrade. What are the soldiers really guarding? What is the aim of their mission in these extremely difficult conditions?
