Mikołaj is a student of oceanography. He signs up for an internship at the marine station in Hel. Under the guidance of his boss/professor, he takes care of a newborn seal. The baby seal is named Hel; it has to learn to live in a herd, gather food on its own, and, most importantly, avoid contact with humans. Unfortunately, a dangerous bond of friendship forms between Mikołaj and Hel. Meanwhile the day when the mature Hel will have to leave the Hel marine station and begin a life in its natural habitat is fast approaching.
