Brought up in a poor family, the 19-year-old Wojtek lives in Silesia. He falls in love with a much older Ukrainian emigrant with a child. He is ready to do anything to ensure her legal right to stay in Poland. He tries working in a factory to make ends meet. However all his attempts at making an honest living fail and his acquaintances tempt him with the possibility of earning easy money in a morally doubtful debt retrieval business.
